A Much Needed Update

Despite all of the crazy winter weather over the past 6 weeks, there have been some very exciting things going on in Room 122.  English 12 has been reading Anthem by Ayn Rand.  The students are enjoying reading about a futuristic society that is completely controlled by the government, and the main character's struggle against what is accepted by society and what he thinks is right.  English 11 has been dealing with Gothic Literature from the early 1800's and just finished Fall of the House of Usher and is moving forward into more Edgar Allan Poe this week when we read The Raven.  The Advanced Composition students are plugging along in their IPFW course and were able to take a field trip to campus on Friday to tour the campus and visit the library and writing center for help on their essays.

AP Comp students before heading home from IPFW

Each class has some exciting units and projects coming up in the near future.  English 12 will be finishing Anthem and writing an analysis essay over the book and a film that we will watch.  They will also be giving short speeches right before Spring Break.  English 11 will continue with work in the Literature Book and lay the groundwork for the research project that will begin after Spring Break.  AP comp will continue to work through their online course and will have a project or two to complete after the IPFW semester is over.

All of this work will be accomplished in part by the extra time that we are getting in class every day for the next six weeks.  With the extra hour that we are getting, we will continue to work through the semester plan and get ourselves caught up from all the time we missed because of the weather. I know that this has thrown a wrinkle in many people's daily lives, but it is something that we will all just have to deal with and make the best of.  In my classes, we will utilize the extra time to begin working on homework for the evening or to go more in depth with pieces of literature that we are reading.  Below is the daily schedule for the next 6 weeks of school.  Just to see who is reading this post, the first 10 students who come to me and can say the secret phrase will get candy.  The phrase is "Purdue beats IU 82-64".
